Beth opens new Uttoxeter venue

Beth Tweddle MBE and World and European Bronze medalist Dan Purvis opened Uttoxeter's new gymnastics venue on Sunday 12th June. Both were impressed by the venue and said it is the start of a "massive opportunity" for young gymnasts in the region.

The club was formed 15 years ago and has gone from strength to strength. This new venue will allow for more gymnasts to attend the club and allow them to develop their skills further with the input of a new £10,000 sprung floor area.

850 gymnasts were put through their paces by Beth and Dan where both helped coach the gymnasts of the Uttoxeter Club.

Club owner Linda Sylvester spoke of her pride at the event: "This is above what we could have hoped for when we started the club. The facility we've got now is absolutely vital to improve our gymnasts, and it gives our smaller members the opportunity to work in a top class facility from a young age."

Her sentiments were echoed by Tweddle, who will be aiming for Olympic gold in London next summer.

"It's a great facility, they've got everything they need to progress, it's great to see a club so intent on progress, and the attitude of the young gymnasts is great, they're so enthusiastic."

The long term aim for the club, which attracts gymnasts from all over Staffordshire, is to see some members progress into national squads, and Sylvester says that the visit of Tweddle will serve to inspire all at the club.

"We had Beth down here to open our previous premises around four and a half years ago. That event is still talked about to this day, so the fact that she is back is great. She is a great ambassador and our members have all been looking forward to meeting her again today."
